Operator Algebras in Quantum Information

This programme is meant as an indication of how the session may proceed. At any moment, however, the schedule can be changed by the discussion leaders. Participants may take part in one, two, or even three of the themes, which we shall denote by the acronyms
ENTANGLEMENT
OPERATOR SPACES
CONES,
and descriptions of which can be found HERE.
They are asked to make their choices on the first day after the kick-off addresses of two of the discussion leaders, Michael Wolf and Géza Giedke. They may change these in the course of the session.
Understanding and mastering quantum information is one of the great challenges of the present epoch. Much progress relies on the steady and stimulating exchange of ideas between mathematics, mathematical physics and theoretical physics, often in close contact to experimenters. In analysing quantum information as encoded in entangled states and its transport through quantum channels, ideas from operator algebras and operator spaces have already played a decisive role. It is to be expected that operator algebraic thinking will play an even more important role in attacking some of the main open problems. In this Session we discuss three such major problems of quantum information where progress is needed and operator algebras will undoubtedly play a large role. So, the mathematical "lingua franca" of this session will be the language of operator algebras. One of the open problems of 2008, the additivity of channel capacity has in the meantime been solved in the negative; other areas have moved to the foreground. With this in mind, we have chosen to focus on one old and two new areas:
1. Entanglement of multipartite and infinite systems;
(ENTANGLEMENT)
2. Spaces of operators, not necessarily operator algebras;
(OPERATOR SPACES)
3. Cones of positive maps on operator algebras.
(POSITIVE CONES)
These three subjects are closely related and they will greatly profit from an event, where world experts have the opportunity to bring together their particular expertises in order to come to new insights.
