 Overview

The study of the atmosphere and oceans as a subject in the mathematical and physical sciences has been pursued for centuries. Today, research in this field faces two major challenges: predicting weather and climate and monitoring environmental pollution. The operational capability to deal with these problems in Southeast Asia is very limited, partly due to socio-economic factors, but also partly due to lack of sufficient knowledge and understanding of these issues in the particular context of the tropics.

This one-month programme is a small effort to address the dearth of knowledge in tropical dynamics. Over two workshops and one lecture-tutorial series, an international gathering of scientists and applied mathematicians would review recent theoretical ideas on geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) and scalar transport within the tropics and while incubating new ideas. The ideas discussed would help organize and elucidate information in datasets generated by weather or sea-state forecast and pollutant dispersion analysis in Southeast Asia. Thus, the programme would also benefit participating applied meteorologists and oceanographers who handle datasets on a day-to-day basis.

The topics listed below will be covered.

  1. Dynamical Models of Tropical Atmosphere and Ocean
  2. Chaotic and Turbulent Scalar Transport
  3. Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Approach to GFD and Transport

 Registration Information

  • No registration or abstract fee is charged.

  • There is some limited budget for financial support for airfare, accommodation and subsistence, including some student support.
  • For attendance at these activities without financial support, please complete the registration form (MSWord|PDF|PS). If you need financial assistance, please apply for IMS membership instead using the membership application form (MSWord|PDF|PS).
  • Completed forms should be faxed to us at (65) 6873 8292 or emailed to us at ims@nus.edu.sg. Please write the subject line of the email or fax as “GFD-STinT: <name of participant>, from <date of arrival> to <date of departure>”.
  • Workshop participants are expected to give a one-hour oral presentation (inclusive of Q&A). For this, please attach a one-page abstract of not more than 500 words of your presentation to your application.
  • The closing date of application is 31 July 2006 (extended).
  • If you are an invited participant, or are already an IMS member, you do not need to fill in any of the above forms to attend these activities. Please get contact the secretary at ims@nus.edu.sg on what you need to do.
