 Overview

This two-month program will bring together leading international physicists, material scientists, computational scientists and applied mathematicians, and experts from NUS Departments of Physics, Materials Science, Mathematics and Computational Science, and from A*STAR institutes IMRE and IHPC. The program participants will:

  1. review the recent development in the research on materials surfaces and interfaces, from experiment to theory to simulation;

  2. identify critical scientific issues in the understanding of the fundamental principles and basic mechanisms of interfacial dynamics in different kinds of materials systems, particularly those that are characterized by fluctuation, multiscale, and non-equilibrium;

  3. accelerate the interaction of applied mathematics and computational science with physics and materials science, and promote the highly interdisciplinary research on new material interface problems with emerging applications.

 Activities

The program activities will consist of:

1. Collaborative research: 24 Nov 2004 - 23 Jan 2005

During the period of the program, Institute for Mathematical Sciences will provide an excellent research environment for local and international visitors from physics, materials science, applied mathematics and computational science to discuss and to conduct collaborative research.

2. Workshop 1: 25 - 27 Nov 2004

This workshop will focus on basic properties of material interfaces in nanoscale systems. Here, material interfaces are understood in a broad sense, and include but are not limited to epitaxial thin films, domain walls in micromagnetic material, martensitic interfaces, grain boundaries, vortices in superconductors, and polymeric chain networks. The basic properties include thermal fluctuation, nucleation, aggregation, kinetics, coarsening, impurities, stresses, charge transport, surface magnetism, effects of applied fields, etc. Participants from areas of statistical mechanics, surface physics, materials science, and applied mathematics, will discuss new issues in nanoscale material interfaces and the possible approaches to solve new problems.

3. Tutorials: 6 - 7 Dec 2004, 17, 20 - 21 Dec 2004, 3 - 7 Jan 2005

Distinguished researchers will give tutorial lectures on topics closely related to the main themes of the program in material physics, computational materials science and applied mathematics. Lecture notes will be distributed.

4. First Singapore Workshop on PDE and Scientific Computing: 23 - 24 Dec 2004

5. Workshop 2: 10 - 14 Jan 2005

This workshop will continue and extend the discussions in Workshop 1, and will focus more on the mathematical and computational aspects of the underlying researches. Participants will explore various kinds of hierarchical models and multiscale algorithms for material interfaces and their relations to bulk material. Possible unified approaches will be identified. Efforts will be made to bridge the length and time scales in different models. Topics will range from mechanical properties of thin films to grain boundary motion and to singularities in Ginzburg-Landau dynamics; from discrete to continuum and to stochastic models; and from ab initio and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to fast algorithms for partial differential equations.
