 Overview

 

The subject of this program is the moduli space of Higgs bundles and its connections with different areas of mathematics and physics.  This space was first studied by Nigel Hitchin, who constructed the moduli space using gauge theory (as a dimensional reduction of the four-dimensional Yang-Mills equations). In Hitchin's words: "...the moduli space of all solutions turns out to be a manifold with an extremely rich geometric structure".

The goals of the program are:

  • Bring together experts who study the geometry, topology and physics of Higgs bundles.
  • Invite leading researchers to give talks on recent results and the latest developments in the field.
  • Have experts give mini-courses explaining the background  to their fields.
  • Encourage collaborative work.
  • Introduce graduate students and young researchers to the latest research and open problems in the field.

  • Higgs bundles, character varieties and non-abelian Hodge theory
  • Asymptotic behaviour of the non-abelian Hodge theory
  • Relations with wall-crossing phenomena in physics

We are planning for a two-week summer school and  an  associated  one-week workshop, as well as a one-week conference  with  talks  from leading researchers.

The activities at  the IMS  will be a continuation of the program  “The geometry and  physics of moduli spaces” at Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT) in Madrid from 14 Apr - 11 Jul 2014.

Summer School (7 - 18 Jul 2014)

  • The first week will focus on the basic theory of the moduli space of Higgs bundles. There will be a short course on Higgs bundles and a short course on character varieties as well as introductory talks by experts.
  • In the second week there will be short courses of a more advanced nature that will serve as an introduction to current research in the field.

Workshop on the Themes of the Summer School (21 - 31 Jul 2014)

Leading researchers will give talks on the current research in the field related to the themes of the summer school. There will also be space for talks by graduate students and postdocs.

Conference (4 - 8 Aug 2014)

The conference will consist of research talks on the latest developments relating to the moduli space of Higgs bundles. The conference has been accepted as a satellite conference to the International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul, South Korea, which begins on Wednesday, 13 Aug 2014.
