As at 5 Jul 2006... In the half century since the unraveling of the structure of DNA, molecular biology has experienced tremendous advances. The trend has accelerated since the completion of the Human Genome Project. Huge volumes of data have been generated. The rate of growth of the volume of data has outpaced our ability to process and understand them. Entirely new research problems that are multi-disciplinary in nature have emerged and there is an urgent need for collaboration between researchers in the life sciences and other disciplines, particularly those in mathematical and computer sciences. Computational biology is the name given to field devoted to the development and use of computational/mathematical techniques in the effective analysis of biological data. The field is young, but is growing very fast and has the potential to produce breakthroughs that will impact the whole spectrum of life sciences as we know it today. New insights into the combinatorial structures of biological data and better algorithms are constantly emerging. Indeed, the emergence of the field of computational biology has prompted the famous computer scientist, Donald E. Knuth, to remark that “Biology easily has 500 years of exciting problems to work on.” The theme of this program is algorithmic biology: algorithmic techniques in computational biology. The program will bring together researchers in algorithmic biology from a wide spectrum of application areas including, but not limited to, sequence comparison and analysis, microarray design and analysis, whole genome alignment, motif finding, recognition of genes and regulatory elements, motif finding, gene network, phylogeny reconstruction, phylogenetic networks, molecular evolution, computational proteomics, and systems biology.

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences invites applications for membership for participation in the above program. Limited funds to cover travel and living expenses are available to young scientists. Applications should be received at least three (3) months before the commencement of membership.
