 Overview

The recent progress in topology has shed light on many deep connections between algebraic topology and the theory of braids. A successful program on Braids was organized in May-July, 2007. This present program is going to explore further the connections between algebraic topology and braids, and to establish further research collaborations in algebraic topology in Asia. The present program will consist of a conference on algebraic topology, and a workshop on special topics.

1. Workshop on Homotopy, Braids and Mapping Class Groups, 4-14 December 2008.

Rationale: This workshop will focus on homotopy theory, braids, mapping class groups and 3-manifolds. Participants will explore the mapping class groups with its connections to homotopy theory and Heegaard splittings for 3-manifolds, configuration spaces and braids, the H-spaces, and the representations of the symmetric group modules Lie(n). Besides research discussion among participants, some introductory talks on selected topics will be given to graduate students.

2. The Second East Asia Conference on Algebraic Topology, 15-19 December 2008.

International Organizers for the conference: Haibao Duan (China), Jianzhong Pan (China), Akira Kono (Japan), Norio Iwase (Japan), Yongjin Song (Korea).

Standard Registration Fee: SGD$200
Please pay in cash (Singapore currency only) at the registration desk after arrival.
We do not accept credit card and check.

 Funding for Young Scientists

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences has limited funds to cover partial support for travel and living expenses for young scientists interested in participating in the program. Applications should be received at least three (3) months before the commencement of the program. Application form is available in (MSWord|PDF|PS) format for download.
